Soon after the birth of my first child in 1988, my studio work shifted exclusively to collage and drawing.

In the collages, the raw material comes primarily from scraps and snippets of children’s artworks, including freehand drawings and coloring book imagery. I don’t make any marks of my own and limit my technical activity to cutting, tearing, and gluing.

In the drawings, the beginning point is always a child’s handmade drawing–- naïve, emotive and artless.  Presuming an underlying archetypal structure there, I perform a kind of archeological dig with compass and rule, the tools basic to the language of geometry–- sophisticated, intellectual, and artful.

The priority in both approaches is to secure a paradoxical and maybe enigmatic alliance between the world of the child and the world of the adult.
